Located on hot springs in classical Phrygia in southwest Anatolia, Hierapolis was an ancient Greek city. Its ruins are close to the present-day Turkish town of Pamukkale, and they currently house an archaeological museum that has been given UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The Tomb of Philip the Apostle is located there.
Since the second century BC, people have visited the hot springs as a spa, often to retire or pass away. The famed sarcophagi of Marcus Aurelius Ammianos, which includes a sculpture showing the first known example of a crank and rod mechanism, are scattered throughout the vast necropolis. The enormous stone blocks used to build the large baths—which were divided into closed and open sections—were assembled without the use of cement.
